On Thursday, October 8, Access to Bankruptcy Court (ABC), a State Bar of Michigan “Access to Justice” program, conducted its Annual Charity Silent Auction and Networking Event at the law offices of Stevenson & Bullock in Southfield. Among those helping to raise funds were (left to right) Ethan Dunn, Andrea Cartwright, David Tovarez, Janet Ziulkowski, Alesia Dobbins, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge Marci McIvor, Anthony Kochis, Tracy Clark, Jim Plemmons, Barry Lefkowitz, Michael Stevenson, and Judy Calton.  ABC was formed after local attorneys, judges, and educators recognized a need for poverty-stricken individuals suffering financial hardship to have essential legal representation. In many cases, these people suffered some catastrophic event such as an illness, disability, or a death in the family that plunged them into economic ruin through no fault of their own.  With the assistance of experienced bankruptcy attorneys donating their time and resources, ABC helps the impoverished through education, debt relief assistance, and bankruptcy. “One of the premises of this charity is to help prevent these individuals from becoming preyed on by unethical bankruptcy petition preparers and to help them get the fresh start that they need,” noted Janet Ziulkowski of Ziulkowski & Associates PLC.
