Using doctrine to protect Great Lakes

The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Law Review hosted a symposium titled “The Public Trust Doctrine: An Ancient Tool for Protecting the Great Lakes from New Hazards” on Friday, Oct. 16, at Detroit Mercy Law’s campus in Detroit. Among those taking part in the symposium were (seated, left to right) Catherine Iorns Magallanes, senior lecturer at Victoria University School of Law; Alexis Andiman of  Conservation Law Center; and James Huffman, professor at Lewis and Clark Law School; along with (standing, left to right) Noah Hall, professor at Wayne State University Law School; Pamela Zarkowski, University of Detroit Mercy provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Jim Olson, president and advisor of FLOW—For Love of Water; Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker; Nicholas Schroeck, director of the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic at Wayne State University Law School; Melissa Scanlan, associate dean of the Environmental Law Program and director of the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School; Kenneth Kilbert, professor at University of Toledo College of Law; Nina Gavrilovic, executive editor-in-chief of Detroit Mercy Law Review; and Jacqueline P. Hand, professor at Detroit Mercy Law. Topics during the symposium included “A Proper Framework for the Public Trust Doctrine and the Great Lakes” and “Trails and Microplastics: New Developments.”
