FLINT (AP) - A former teacher convicted of killing his wife has been sent to prison for at least 50 years, a punishment that could keep the Flint-area man locked up until he dies.
Genesee County Judge Archie Hayman says Andrew Farley Jr. had planned his wife's death over a long period. Tiffany Caine-Smith Farley was fatally stabbed at their Grand Blanc Township home last year.
The 44-year-old Farley asked for mercy last week, insisting he didn't intend to kill his wife. Defense attorney Ken Karasick says the stabbing was an "act of passion" after Farley's wife threatened to leave him.
Karasick says he will appeal the sentence, which was above the guidelines for second-degree murder. Farley won't be eligible for parole until he's in his 90s.
Police say Farley didn't call 911 after the stabbing.
