'Operation Coat Check' seeks to collect coats for those in need

DETROIT (AP) - A new campaign is taking place across the Detroit area to collect coats to help keep those in need warm this winter.

It's called "Operation Coat Check" and it started Monday. St. Vincent de Paul is asking people to go through their closets and check for coats that they no longer wear. New or slightly used coats for children and adults may be dropped off at Art Van Furniture stores through Feb. 11.

St. Vincent de Paul says donations can make a big difference in people's lives. Gary Van Elslander, president of Art Van, says in statement: "Everyone deserves to have a winter coat to help keep them warm during Michigan's harsh winter months."

Monetary donations also are being accepted online by St. Vincent de Paul.
