DETROIT (AP) - A trial has been scheduled for a man charged in the shooting of a federal judge during an attempted robbery at his Detroit home.
The Detroit News reports a Wayne County Circuit Court judge on Tuesday set an April 27 trial date for 23-year-old Kevin Smith of Detroit. He faces robbery, assault and other charges. The court also set a pretrial hearing date.
Defense lawyer John L. McWilliams says he has a large volume of transcripts of interviews, crime scene information and other material to review in the case.
Police say U.S. District Judge Terrence Berg was shot in the leg March 5 after being confronted while retrieving his trash can.
A second man is charged, but prosecutors say he's a cooperating witness. They haven't released his name.
