Five students from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C. spent their spring break March 7-11 assisting staff attorneys at Legal Aid and Defender Association Inc. (LAD). Joon Sung (left), deputy chief counsel-legal services for the Civil Law Group of LAD, and Michele Hall (center), chief counsel of the group, welcomed Georgetown University Law Center students (left to right) Marissa Hatton, Charlotte Berschback, Carmen Tracy, Kathryn Panish and Andrew Shindi to LAD headquarters in Detroit. The students researched legal issues, drafted briefs and motions, and observed an appellate oral argument, according to Sung. Vijay Kasschau, a third-year student at Georgetown Law, coordinated the spring break trip to Detroit. The school helps to pay for travel and hotels for law students working on pro bono projects during spring break, he told Sung. “It was great to host the students for the week,” Sung said. “They were able to assist our clients and at the same time learn about Detroit and legal practice.”
