Judge to be honored by Holocaust Center

The Holocaust Memorial Center Zekelman Family Campus will host its 32nd Anniversary Dinner on Sunday, Oct. 30, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375 Bell Rd. in Southfield.

The annual fundraising event, which begins with a strolling dinner at 5:30 p.m., will honor Rozanne and Bernard Friedman. U.S. District Court Judge Bernard A. Friedman is widely admired as a guardian of justice and a protector of human rights. His ruling that Michigan’s ban on same-sex marriage was unconstitutional was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court, which extended marriage rights to all who wish to marry. Rozanne Friedman is a caring and skilled psychotherapist who has helped many gain the necessary tools to cope with life’s challenges. Historian and Author Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt will deliver the keynote address. The program will begin at 7 p.m. followed by a dessert afterglow.

Passionate about the mission of the Holocaust Memorial Center, the Friedmans have been longtime supporters of the museum. This has included, for Judge Friedman, organizing regular visits to the Center for numerous departments of the court, as well as federal agencies.

Dr. Deborah E. Lipstadt’s historic legal battle against Holocaust denial is depicted in the Hollywood film “Denial,” which is based on her book “History on Trial: My Day in Court with a Holocaust Denier.” Opening in metropolitan Detroit on Oct. 14, the movie stars Academy Award Winner Rachel Weisz as Lipstadt, along with Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Spall.

Lipstadt is the Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies at Emory University and is the author of four books. She served on the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council and the U.S. State Department Advisory Committee on Religious Freedom Abroad, advising the Secretary of State. She has appeared on CNN, Sixty Minutes, The Today Show, Good Morning America, NPR, BBC and the Charlie Rose show.

At this year’s event, Jackie and Larry Kraft are serving as dinner chairs, Karolyn and Arie Leibovitz as honorary chairs and Richard K. Stoler and Barbara and Irvin Kappy as dinner advisors. The VIP reception is generously being sponsored by Schechter Wealth and the dessert reception by Dickinson Wright PLLC.
