More than 100 people attended the Levin Center at Wayne Law’s Jan. 31 conference in Washington, D.C. on “Next Steps in Offshore Multinational Corporate Tax.”
The program presented diverse views on how Congress and the new administration can tackle issues related to multinational corporate offshore profits. This was the center’s third national conference.
Retired U.S. Sens. Carl Levin and Tom A. Coburn, M.D., co-chaired the event. Levin is chair of the Levin Center at Wayne Law, Wayne Law’s distinguished legislator in residence, senior counsel at Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn, and former chairman of the U.S. Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. Coburn is a member of the Levin Center at Wayne Law’s Advisory Board and a former ranking member of the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations. During their time on the subcommittee, Levin and Coburn conducted a number of bipartisan investigations into corporate tax matters.

• Edward Kleinbard, Johnson professor of law and business, University of Southern California Gould School of Law; fellow, The Century Foundation; former chief of staff, Congress’ Joint Committee on Taxation.
• Paul W. Oosterhuis, of counsel, Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom.
Moderating the discussion was Elise Bean, Washington co-director of the Levin Center at Wayne Law. From 2003 to 2014, she served as staff director and chief counsel for Sen. Levin on the U.S. Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.
Opening remarks were provided by Wayne Law Interim Dean Lance Gable and Jocelyn Benson, director of the Levin Center at Wayne Law.
