Retired U.S. District Judge Patrick Duggan (photo, left) was saluted by the Incorporated Society of Irish American Lawyers (ISIAL) at a special reception April 27 in Detroit. A founding member of the ISIAL, Duggan retired from the federal bench in the fall of 2015 after an illustrious legal career. A 1955 graduate of Xavier University in Cincinnati, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, Duggan obtained his law degree from the University of Detroit in 1958. He practiced law in Livonia from 1959-76 before accepting an appointment from then-Governor William Milliken to the Wayne County Circuit Court. He served 10 years on the Circuit Court bench, ascending to the U.S. District Court in 1987, where he served for 28 years. On hand for the reception were (photo right, left to right) Brian O’Brien, consul general of Ireland; U.S. District Court Judge Sean Cox, Eastern District of Michigan; Michael Kelly, president, United Irish Societies; Duggan; State Bar of Michigan President Lawrence Nolan; and ISIAL President Joseph McGill.
