The Detroit Chapter of the Association for Women in Communications held its 2017 Matrix Awards ceremony May 18 at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield. Former Wayne State University Law Dean Jocelyn Benson, CEO of the Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality, was the keynote speaker, discussing the “critical need for female leaders in all aspects of society,” according to Deniella Ortiz-Lalain, president of the AWC. Ortiz-Lalain is pictured with the evening’s emcee, Carol Cain (right), Emmy Award winning host of “Michigan Matters” on CBS 62 in Detroit and a columnist with The Detroit Free Press.
