CYBERSPACE SIGHTING: Mi.gov celebrates Michigan Social Media Day, June 30

To celebrate social media's evolving impact on communications, Gov. Rick Snyder has proclaimed Friday, June 30, as Michigan Social Media Day.

"Social media has allowed Michigan's government departments and agencies to improve interaction with residents and provide a better customer service experience," Snyder said. "The ever-expanding exchange of information allowed by social media is an important factor in our mission to create a more people-focused government."

In celebration of Michigan Social Media Day, the state of Michigan has a number of activities planned for individuals and businesses. Activities include:

- Sharing the 2017 Michigan Social Media Day proclamation on social media using hashtag #SMDayMI.

- A statewide Twitter chat on June 30 from noon to 1 p.m. Hosted by Michigan.gov, the chat will explore how social media influences the way we live, work and play. Join the chat by following @MiGov on Twitter and by using hashtag #SMDayChat in Tweets. Pure Michigan will be giving several prizes away to chat participants, join and use hashtag #SMDayChat for the chance to win.

- A new post on Gov. Rick Snyder's Medium account about how social media is improving customer service and transparency in government.

"Social media influences the way we live, the way we play, and for many, the way we do business," said Andrew Belanger, Statewide Digital Content Administrator with the state of Michigan. "Social media's global integration in disseminating news in real time, selling products and services, providing customized customer support experiences and connecting people and resources has changed how we connect, consume and share information."

As the third state in the U.S. to recognize Social Media Day in 2012, Michigan government has long embraced the use of social media to extend traditional channels of constituent engagement. Over the years, the state's digital footprint has grown, along with its focus on improving transparency and a quality customer experience.

Working to create a more citizen-centric government, the state of Michigan launched a new searchable directory for its social media accounts this month. The public can now search the state's more than 450 active social media accounts by social media platform, department, topic categories and key word. In addition to account search features the state launched a resource of commonly used hashtags.
