Medical Marijuana was the topic of discussion at an Aug. 29 public meeting at the Macomb County Community College campus in Clinton Township. Among those on hand for the event were (left to right) Robert Cannon, Clinton Township supervisor; Jenn Zielinski with Dunaskiss Consulting and Development Inc.; Dr. Saqib Nakadar, an internal medicine specialist; and attorney Jeffrey Schroder of Plunkett Cooney. A township press release said the purpose of the meeting was to “educate, not advocate” for medical cannabis. In 2008, Michigan voters approved a ballot measure to allow the use of cannabis for medicinal purposes. In 2016, the state Legislature passed the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act (MMMA) to establish parameters for the growth, distribution, and use of medical cannabis. Municipalities must decide whether to allow medical cannabis businesses to operate within their borders or to prohibit them. “This is a crucial time for municipalities and there is a lot to consider, including income tax land use, public safety, and community revenue implications,” said Schroder, a member of Plunkett Cooney’s Government Affairs Practice Group and Cannabis Industry Group. He said he hoped to “help residents and elected officials understand the potential implications of a medical cannabis business in their community.”
