Coaches needed for Oakland County Sheriff PAL Program

The Oakland County Sheriff PAL (Police Athletic League) is seeking potential coaches and volunteer field coordinators to assist Oakland County youth sports leagues in basketball, flag football, and soccer for fall 2017. Individuals will have the unique privilege to interact with children and families, while assisting in the development of the community. PAL is asking for a commitment of 1-2 hours/week for 8-12 weeks, where volunteers can make a difference in a child’s life. A stipend is available for coaches willing to dedicate this time and sign a coaches’ contract.

The schedule is:

• Basketball–Monday, 5:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. (age 9-15)

•  Soccer–Monday through Thursday, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., Friday, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. (grades 4-6)

• Flag Football–Saturday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (grades 6-8)

Fall programming for basketball and flag football will be clinic style sessions to develop and improve athletic skills.  Participants will learn techniques, run drills, and participate in scrimmages.  Soccer will hold two practices per week, Monday through Thursday, with games on Fridays. Soccer practices will take place directly after school, but allow for flexibility with coach’s preference on which two days to practice. Mandatory scheduled soccer games on Friday evenings will be between 6 to 8 p.m.

Coaches will be responsible for communicating with their team weekly about upcoming clinics, practices, games, or events.  Following a brief coaches training course hosted by PAL, coaches will have the role of conducting practices, scrimmages, and games depending on the sport. A stipend is available for coaches willing to dedicate this time and sign a coaches’ contract.

Volunteer field coordinators ensure the cleanliness of the environment, help spectators give positive reinforcement to each and every player, assist officials if necessary, and clean the field thoroughly following the event.

All coaches and volunteers for the Sheriff PAL Program will need to submit an application and be subject to a background check. For more information, contact Ryan Russell, Sheriff PAL executive director, at 248-321-8448 (call or text).
