Former U.S. District Court Chief Judge Gerald E. Rosen (center), Eastern District of Michigan, was honored with the 2017 Torch of Learning Award during a special ceremony September 12 in Detroit. The award ceremony took place at the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center, the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and was hosted by the American Friends of the Hebrew University (AFHU) in Jerusalem. “This is like a second Bar Mitzvah for me, except all the checks are going to Hebrew University,” Rosen quipped upon accepting the award during the ceremony. The award, which in the past has been presented to such luminaries as President Ronald Reagan and U.S. Senator Carl Levin, was created by the AFHU to “recognize esteemed individuals distinguished by their achievements in the field of law and who have influenced the course of higher education in the United States and Israel,” according to Beth McCoy, national executive director of AFHU. Pictured with retired Judge Rosen are Asher Cohen (left), president of Hebrew University, and Ira Lee Sorkin, a co-chair of the event and a past winner of the Torch Award.
