Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette Monday reminded Michigan residents to learn more about online threats as part of national Cyber Security Awareness Month by enrolling in the consumer education programs offered through his consumer protection team.
"In recent weeks, more than 4 million Michigan residents have had their information exposed as part of the Equifax data breach," said Schuette. "This recent breach highlights the need for more information, and my Consumer Protection team's seminars are a great way to get the trusted information you need in case of an identity theft or the steps you should take to prevent this from happening to you."
The Department of Attorney General will be hosting two free seminars about identity theft. These are scheduled as follows:
- Lansing: Friday, Oct. 20, from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m. in the G. Mennen Williams Auditorium; 525 West Ottawa Street.
- Detroit: Wednesday, Oct. 25, from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m. at Cadillac Place Room L150; 3068 West Grand Blvd.
Some of the additional programs offered this month include: Investment Fraud, Identity Theft, Online Safety, Home Repair and Improvement, Phone, Mail and e-Scams and In-Home Care and Senior Residences. Anyone interested in attending a presentation can review the calendar of events at www.michigan.gov/ag. All events are free and open to the public. To attend, residents are asked to contact the venue to register prior to the seminar. The calendar is updated regularly so interested residents can find out what seminars are being held in their area.
On Sept. 27, Schuette and his Consumer Protection Team celebrated surpassing 100,000 Michigan residents taking part in one or more of the department's educational programs.
In 2016, more than 720 Consumer Education programs educated more than 16,000 consumers. This year alone the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division has held more than 570 events educating more than 11,200 consumers.
Additionally, the Department of Attorney General is devoted to protecting children across the state of Michigan through safety programs like OK2SAY and CSI (Cyber Safety Initiative). In 2016 alone the OK2SAY and CSI presentations had almost 248,000 attendees.
