The Michigan Supreme Court last Thursday named 142 judges to serve as chief judges of trial courts statewide. In virtually all cases, the appointments commence on January 1, 2018, for a period of two years. The Supreme Court also renamed Judge Michael J. Talbot to serve as chief judge of the Court of Appeals.
“We look to our chief judges to manage the administrative affairs of their courts, demonstrate and encourage the highest standards of judicial conduct, and ensure that all persons who have business in our courthouses are treated with courtesy and respect,” said Chief Justice Stephen J. Markman.
By court rule (MCR 8.110), a chief judge is the presiding officer of the court and also has “administrative superintending power and control over the judges of the court and all court personnel ...” These responsibilities include caseload management and disposition of judicial workloads, supervision of all court personnel and finances, and other critical functions.
Local judges appointeed include:
• Judge Shalina D. Kumar, Oakland County Circuit Court
• Judge Kathleen A. Ryan, Oakland County Probate Court
• Judge Joseph G. Fabrizio, 52nd District Court
• Judge Joseph Longo, 43rd District Court
• Judge Derek W. Meinecke, 44th District Court
• Judge Michelle Friedman Appel, 45th District Court
• Judge Shelia R. Johnson, 46th District Court
• Judge Marla E. Parker, 47th District Court
• Judge Diane D’Agostini, 48th District Court
