Governor reappoints West Michigan attorney to Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect

Gov. Rick Snyder has announced the reappointment of West Michigan attorney Christopher Wirth to the Governor’s Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect restructured by Executive Order 2017-4.  The board promotes the health, safety and welfare of Michigan’s children and families by funding local programs and services that prevent child abuse and neglect.  Wirth will continue to serve on its law and policy committee which reviews and makes recommendations to the board regarding child welfare law, court rules and processes, and policies related to the Child Protective Services division of the Department of Health and Human Services. The board is best known as the body that produced and updates the Forensic Interview Protocol, a best-practices approach to eliciting accurate and trustworthy child interviews.

Wirth has served as lawyer to more than 500 children who are victims and survivors of child abuse and neglect.  He has also represented wrongfully accused parents in child abuse and neglect civil and criminal proceedings. Through his litigation practice, he has represented clients in more than 3,000 court appearances and 100 trials throughout 21 Michigan counties, and the federal courts for the Western and Eastern Districts.

“I am looking forward to the next four years of continuing to preserve and improve the way Michigan protects its children. I am particularly excited to be working on initiatives to improve and hold accountable the legal representation that children are receiving from their court appointed attorneys,” Wirth said.

Wirth is the founding member of Core Legal PLC, started in 2013. Before that, Wirth practiced in the Grand Rapids offices of Dykema Gossett and Rhoades McKee. He earned his law degree at Case Western Reserve University, an MBA from Grand Valley State University and a bachelor’s from Hope College.

Wirth has taught as a visiting law professor at WMU-Cooley Law School and as an adjunct law professor at GVSU.  He has served on the Ottawa County Bar Association board since 2015.
