The State Bar of Michigan’s and the American Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Sections sponsored the panel discussion, “Taking the Next Step: Tips and Tools for Your Legal Education Journey,” at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus on Jan. 27.
Kristina Bilowus, representative for both sponsoring organizations, served as the event moderator. Panelists included students and graduates from Michigan’s five law schools and represented every level of legal education.
Bilowus said the purpose of the program was to create dialogue among all the law schools in Michigan, foster professional relationships and encourage service in the profession.
Retired Judge John “Jack” Gilbreath delivered the keynote address where he encouraged collegiality, passion for learning and practical skill development. Deeming lawyers as the “physicians of society,” he extolled the panel and audience for their participation and commitment to the profession.
Panelists Sherwin Shushtari (1L WMU-Cooley Law School), Michelle Shember (2L University of Detroit Mercy School of Law), Graham Anderson (3L Wayne State University Law School), Nicole Raap (3L Michigan State University College of Law) and Peter Keros (University of Michigan Law School graduate) addressed academics, career planning and offered advice on a variety of law-related topics.
Individuals in attendance included those from their first year in law school to those who will be taking the February bar exam. In addition to the panel, the program included a networking luncheon.
