Michigan Association for Justice endorses Bagenstos, Cavanagh for Michigan Supreme Court
At the end of March, Michigan Association for Justice (MAJ) President Brian J. McKeen announced the endorsements of Samuel Bagenstos and Megan Cavanagh for Michigan Supreme Court. Bagenstos and Cavanagh are each seeking one of two eight-year seats on the ballot this November.
“MAJ is proud to support two extremely well-qualified candidates who will bring balance back to the Michigan Supreme Court,” McKeen said. “For too long, the Court has been heavily tilted in favor of powerful special interests over the interests of regular people and their families. Sam and Megan get it. They have demonstrated throughout their careers a commitment to a fair and open justice system that treats everyone equally.”
Bagenstos, a University of Michigan law professor, served as Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights under President Obama. The nationally-recognized and respected civil rights lawyer has argued cases in courts across the country, including winning a recent case in the federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals on behalf of Flint residents suing for harms experienced during the Flint Water Crisis.
Bagenstos is a graduate of the University of North Carolina and received his law degree from Harvard. Early in his career, Bagenstos served as law clerk to U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. He and his wife live with their two teenage children in Ann Arbor.
Cavanagh, considered one of Michigan’s top appellate attorneys, is a shareholder at Garen Lucow Miller P.C. in Detroit. In addition to representing clients before both the state and federal appellate courts, she has devoted her time and experience to improving Michigan’s legal system and ensuring Michigan citizens have equal access to the courts. Cavanagh is a life-long Michigander, a mother of two daughters, and a graduate of the University of Michigan College of Engineering and Wayne State University Law School. She is the daughter of former Michigan Supreme Court Justice Michael Cavanagh.
The Michigan Association for Justice, formerly the Michigan Trial Lawyers Association (MTLA), is a trade association of over 1,500 plaintiff's attorneys and staff, with offices in Lansing.
