Clerks bringing voter registration to schools

Ahead of upcoming elections, Oakland County Clerk/Register of Deeds Lisa Brown is joining several municipal clerks for voter registration drives at some area high schools.

• West Bloomfield High School, April 19.

• Wylie E. Groves High School, May 22.

• Ernest W. Seaholm High School, May 23.

“I encourage citizens to start voting as soon as they are eligible, to exercise their fundamental right as Americans,” said Brown. “By bringing registration services to the schools, we’re empowering young people to have their voices heard.”

Brown will be joining several municipal clerks at the various registration drives, including Debbie Binder (West Bloomfield), Amy Burton (Bloomfield Hills), Aileen Dickson (Troy), Dennise Dryden (Sylvan Lake), Cherilynn Mynsberge (Birmingham), Janet Roncelli (Bloomfield Twp.), and Sharon Tischler (Southfield Twp.).

The events have the additional advantage of in-person registration. “If you don’t register to vote in person, then the first time you vote must be in person,” said Brown. “That means an 18-year-old who is away at college can’t vote by absentee ballot. I want to do all I can to make it easier for citizens to vote.”

Students who will be 18 by the next election can register to vote, and should bring a driver’s license or other state-issued identification with them to complete their registration.

The deadline for Michigan residents to register to vote in the August election is July 9 and the deadline to vote in the November election is October 9.
