Judge Gregory Mathis, star of the long-running courtroom TV show “Judge Mathis,” was presented the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Alumni Achievement Spirit Award at a special reception April 26. A Detroit native, Mathis is a former 36th District Court judge who for the past two decades has presided over small claims disputes in the reality TV show. Throughout his career, Mathis (pictured third from right) has shown a “deep commitment to promoting equal justice and supporting youth education and empowerment initiatives in Detroit,” according to a spokesperson for the law school. Among those on hand for the reception at Detroit Mercy Law were (left to right) Dr. Antoine Garibaldi, president of the University of Detroit Mercy; Pamela Zarkowski, UDM provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis Crocker; Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Denise Langford Morris, a UDM trustee; Gail Carr Williams, associate director of Community Affairs at Vanderbilt University and a Detroit Mercy Law alumna; and David Williams II, athletics director at Vanderbilt University and a Detroit Mercy Law alum who hosted the reception for Mathis.
