Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette on Tuesday announced that Kevin Beverly, 45, formerly of Washtenaw County, was sentenced to 5-15 years in prison one one felony count of Witness Intimidation and 8-20 years in prison on one felony count of Extortion. The sentences which will be served consecutively relate to threats he made to his ex-wife.
Beverly was sentenced on Tuesday, May 15, before Judge Carol Kuhnke in the 22nd Circuit Court.
"Today's sentence ensures Nicole Beverly and her children can continue to live their life without fear," said Schuette. "I am proud to be her voice in court. Nicole could have run but she chose to fight against the abuse she faced and today she should feel proud not only for her incredible determination to protect her family but also for the voice she is giving to others suffering from domestic violence."
Beverly was found guilty by a jury in April 2018.
Schuette charged Beverly in July of 2017 in three counties, Washtenaw, Wayne, and Jackson. Beverly has already been sentenced to 5-10 years in Wayne County. His trial in Jackson County is set for May 21.
In October of 2012, Kevin Beverly contacted his former wife Nicole Beverly on numerous occasions at her home in Washtenaw County, instructing her as to how she should testify at their upcoming child support proceeding and is alleged to have made threats that she would be harmed if she did not follow his instructions. He is believed to have continued to harass Nicole Beverly at her place of employment in Wayne County after she reported his conduct, including threatening to kill her for filing a police report.
