On May 16, Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette and Special Counsel Bill Forsyth released statements regarding the settlement in principle between Michigan State University and the survivors of Larry Nassar.
The background of their statements is that over the decades Dr. Larry Nassar was a doctor specializing in sports medicine at Michigan State University and national team doctor for USA Gymnastics national team doctor, he sexually abused female patients. Earlier this year, having pled guilty to abuse of nine of the victims as well as to child pornography charges, Nassar was given what amounts to a life sentence (with his earliest possible release in 2069, when he would be 105).
Michigan State University, which severed ties with Nassar in 2017, announced Wednesdays that it had agreed to a settlement with the 332 girls and women who have come forward with accusations against the doctor as of that date. The settlement, totalling $500 million, is separated into $425 million for the current victims (approximately $1.3 million each) and $75 million to be set aside for future accusers.
Attorney General Bill Schuette stated:
“I am pleased for the survivors of Larry Nassar's mistreatment that this settlement is occurring. This is about justice for the survivors; each of the women who came forward deserve justice. Those who spoke at the many days of sentencing remain in my thoughts every day, and their strength is an inspiration to us all.”
And Special Counsel Bill Forsyth, formerly the Kent County?prosecutor, said:
“It is very important to see resolution on the civil side, and I hope this provides some sense of relief and closure for the survivors. That being said, my investigation is still open and ongoing.”
