On May 22, the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law chapter of the American Inns of Court held its year-end reception honoring the Masters of the Bench and Barristers.
The event was hosted by Ven Johnson, an executive committee member of the Inn and founder of Johnson Law.
During the event, attendees celebrated the retirement of Detroit Mercy Law Professor Gary Maveal, a long-time advocate and administrator of the school’s American Inns of Court chapter. Maveal has been instrumental in developing the monthly Inn programs, which strive to simulate practical litigation scenarios for members. Under his leadership, the chapter has helped hundreds of Detroit Mercy Law students by connecting them with Michigan judges and lawyers and facilitating professional skills training to benefit their future careers.
Maveal recounted the Inn’s founding in 1984 by U.S. District Judge Julian A. Cook Jr. and Dean Bernard Dobranski. Cook played a critical role in establishing the Inn by enlisting the assistance of Detroit judges and litigators who anchored its early years. These original and sustaining Masters of the Bench included Michigan Court of Appeals Judge Harold Hood and U.S. Magistrate Judge Steven D. Pepe along with attorneys George Bedrosian, Bill Booth (Plunkett Cooney), Dave DuMouchel (Butzel Long), John Kruse (Harvey Kruse), and Bill Saxton (Butzel Long). Detroit Mercy Law is indebted to these and countless other judges and attorneys for their valuable contributions to its students over the years.
In a surprise visit, Michigan Supreme Court Justice Brian K. Zahra, a former master of the bench and a fellow alumnus of Detroit Mercy Law, presented Maveal with a resolution from the Michigan Supreme Court honoring his service as the administrator of the chapter.
