High school students will now be able to use their internship and work experience toward graduation credits under legislation signed Wednesday by Michigan Lt. Gov. Brian Calley.
"This legislation will allow Michigan high schoolers the opportunity to gain real-world work experience while working toward their high school graduation requirements," Calley said.
House Bills 4106 and 5676, sponsored by state Reps. Beau LaFave and Brandt Iden, respectively, would require the boards of school districts and public school academies to grant high school credit under certain circumstances to students in grades 9-12 who complete an internship or work experience. The bills are now Public Acts 184 and 185 of 2018.
Calley also signed HBs 5726-5729, sponsored by state Reps. Eric Leutheuser, Pamela Hornberger, Jeff Noble, and Brandt Iden, respectively, clarifying existing law and enacting a new law to differentiate between illegal promotional pyramid schemes and legitimate direct selling companies. The bills prohibit a person from establishing, promoting, operating, or participating in a pyramid promotional scheme and create penalties for noncompliance. The bills are now PAs 186-189 of 2018.
Article V Section 26 of the Michigan Constitution gives authority to the lieutenant governor to sign legislation when the governor is out of state.
