Judge Warren presents report on bicentennial to committee

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren and the Oakland County Bicentennial Study Group presented a report to the Oakland County Board of Commissioners General Government Committee on how the county should celebrate its upcoming 200th birthday.

The Bicentennial Study Group was established as an exploratory group at the request of the Board of Commissioners and was tasked to brainstorm ideas for the county’s bicentennial celebration which will take place in 2020.

“The bicentennial is a wonderful teachable moment,” Warren reflected, “It will enable us to embrace our historical commitment to liberty since our founding by Governor Cass, and prepare for the bright future ahead of us.”

Warren explained the importance of commemorating the county’s history as the United States did in 1976 for its bicentennial, including the educational and inspirational impact it had on American society. Warren, the group’s chairman, opened the presentation with an overview of various recommendations.

Other group members also presented marketing, educational and other strategies to the committee. One major idea presented was to design a monument that would reflect the proud 200 years of Oakland County’s history. Other ideas included a bicentennial park, lesson plans, brochures, historical research, concerts, and a fair.

Several commissioners asked questions before putting their own perspective on the importance of celebrating Oakland County. The commissioners were pleased with the group’s ideas and praised them for their hard work and commitment to the county’s bicentennial.

Residents should be on the lookout for more information about the celebration and how to become involved.
