For two decades, Michigan Community Resources has worked to advance the missions of Michigan nonprofit organizations through pro bono and low cost legal and other professional services, organizational development, and trusted guidance.
In commemoration of 20 years’ service, Michigan Community Resources will host a Homecoming and Community Reunion on Thursday, Oct. 4, in Detroit. The celebration will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Eastern, located at 3434 Russell Street, Ste. 501, in Detroit.
The Homecoming and Community Reunion includes a strolling dinner provided by local food trucks, live entertainment and a community bonfire. Tickets are $150 each or two for $250 if purchased by Sept. 15; and $175 and $300, respectively, thereafter. Tickets are available by phone at 313-949-6837 and online at www.mi-community.org.
Michigan Community Resources envisions strong Michigan communities built on strong organizations, strong leaders, and a strong nonprofit network. In addition to marking 20 years of service to Michigan nonprofit organizations, the Homecoming and Community Reunion will build momentum for the next 20 years. The organization’s goal is to provide community-based organizations serving low-income communities with the guidance, tools, and resources they need to thrive.
“We are very proud of the work our nonprofit partners do in the communities they serve,” Shamyle Dobbs, chief executive officer for Michigan Community Resources, said. “These organizations are on the front lines in their neighborhoods, addressing issues that affect our quality of life. This work is tireless and oftentimes under resourced. We leverage our networks and resources to support their efforts. We are humbled to play this role in ground-up community change. We know how working together can make a world of difference."
Originally known as Community Legal Resources, Michigan Community Resources (MCR) grew from a legal service provider for nonprofits to a comprehensive support organization for nonprofits that serve low-income communities in Michigan. The nonprofit organization today provides an extensive array of services to help low-income communities improve their quality of life. MCR’s flagship program is the Pro Bono Legal Assistance Program. This leverages the support of volunteer attorneys to provide transactional legal services to qualified nonprofits.
Many nonprofits charged with a mission to help others are often limited by a lack of resources. For those serving low income individuals and communities, insufficient resources can mean vital programs and services are not delivered to those in need. To fill that gap, MCR has provided vital services for 20 years, such as pro bono and low cost legal and other professional services, organizational development, and trusted guidance.
Among the services MCR offers is free legal assistance. Since 1998, MCR has provided more than $16 million in free legal assistance to more than 1,200 non-profit organizations throughout Michigan. MCR is working to enlist additional professionals who can provide pro bono services in other areas including finance, accounting, business planning, social media and marketing, information technology and data collection, and project management in order to continue to expand the professional services available to nonprofit organizations and little or no cost. MCR also has provided almost $1 million in mini-grants for neighborhood beauty and safety initiatives; and provided vacant property related assistance to more than 200 community organizations in Detroit.
Other critical professional services MCR offers are finance, accounting, business planning, information technology and data collection, and project management. In addition, MCR is a source of training, workshops, and publications.
