ANN ARBOR (AP) - A 37-year-old Michigan woman has been sentenced to a year behind bars and five years of probation for supplying drugs that killed a friend in 2016.
The Ann Arbor News reports Lisa Mae Shears cried as she was sentenced last Thursday in the death of 32-year-old Evan Guenther of Gregory, who died after taking fentanyl-laced heroin. She pleaded guilty in September to one felony count of delivery of a controlled substance.
Shears and her attorney said Guenther was the best friend of Shears' brother, who died about 10 years ago. She asked: "Why couldn't it just have been me?"
Prosecutors say Shears, who previously had her bond revoked for failing drug screenings, may be released to inpatient treatment while serving her sentence.
