The Michigan Supreme Court Advocates Guild held its annual dinner Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the 6th floor rotunda at the Hall of Justice in Lansing. Chief Justice Stephen J. Markman spoke, with all justices in attendance, and thanked the Guild for its efforts on behalf of the Supreme Court Historical Society and for representing the best and most skillful advocates to come before the court.
Received into the Michigan Supreme Court Advocates Guild at the annual dinner was David L. Moffitt. Admitted to the bar in 1979, Moffitt practices trial and appellate law in Bingham Farms as principle of the Law Offices of David L. Moffitt & Associates and first argued before the high court in 2012.
"I am honored to join the Advocates Guild and to participate in their work on behalf of the preservation of the court's history and tradition, and for the recognition of my firm's work before the court. The opportunity to get to know the state's leading high court advocates and the justices themselves is truly a rare and valuable opportunity," Moffitt said.
Moffitt most recently appeared before the high court in January, 2018, and won a unanimous reversal applying for the first time the United States Supreme Court precedent of Gray v Maryland, 523 US 185; 118 SCt 1151; 140 LEd2d 294 (1998), disapproving use of the term "blank" to substitute for a defendant's name against whom the statement of a co-defendant is sought to be admitted in a single jury trial.
