Two months in prison for ex-union official in corruption probe

DETROIT (AP) — A former union official has been sentenced to 60 days in prison for using money from the UAW-Chrysler National Training Center for shoes, jewelry and other personal benefits.

Virdell King was associate director of the United Auto Workers’ Fiat Chrysler department and served on a national negotiating committee in 2011 and 2015.

King apologized Tuesday and said the “lapse in judgment” shouldn’t mar her years of work for the union. Her mild sentence reflected the benefits of cooperating with investigators.

Seven people have pleaded guilty in the federal probe, including Fiat Chrysler’s former senior labor negotiator. The indictment alleged there was a conspiracy between some company officials and senior members of the union to use money from the training center for travel, clothes, booze, and other luxuries.
