'Constitution 101' - Judge speaks to students at Oakland Community College

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Michael Warren recently guest lectured to a class of Business Law students at Oakland Community College about "Constitution 101." His presentation was well received and attended by faculty as well as students.

Warren reviewed the philosophical foundations of the Declaration of Independence, including the First Principles of the Rule of Law, Unalienable Rights, Limited Government, the Social Compact, Equality, and the Right to Revolution. He then explained how those First Principles were incorporated and embedded into the federal Constitution. In broad strokes, he explained the structure of the federal Constitution, including the separation of powers (including the power of each branch), checks and balances, federalism, enumerated powers, and the Bill of Rights. He reviewed the ratification process, the amendment process, and the constitutional convention provision. He highlighted Thomas Paine's role in sparking the American Revolution. Warren also reviewed the court structure in Michigan.

In addition, Warren reviewed Patriot Week which spans from 9/11 (the anniversary of the terrorist attacks) - 9/17 (the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution - Constitution Day). Patriot Week renews the spirit of America by celebrating our founding First Principles, key documents and speeches, founding fathers and other great patriots, and flags from our history. The commemoration was co-founded by Warren with his then 10-year-old, daughter, Leah. For additional information, visit www.PatriotWeek.org.

During his presentation, Warren relied heavily on his book, "America's Survival Guide, How to Stop America's Impending Suicide by Reclaiming Our First Principles and History," which focuses on the First Principles of Declaration of Independence, the American Revolution, the Constitution, Civil War, Civil Rights Struggles, and suggestions for renewing the spirit of America. Warren is a former member of the Michigan State Board of Education. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Cornerstone Education Group as education chair.
