March is National Reading Month and Oakland County commissioners honored the occasion last Thursday at their board meeting by inscribing personal messages into their favorite children’s books. The books will be donated to elementary schools in their districts. The effort was spearheaded by Board Chairman David T. Woodward (D-Royal Oak).

“Among the greatest gifts we can give our young people is the gift of literacy and a love for reading,” said Woodward. “Success in school and life can be traced back to the development of strong literacy skills at an early age. Oakland County is excited to commemorate this occasion by selecting our childhood favorites for local schools across the county.”

Woodward selected “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss and will be donating the new book to Addams Elementary School in Royal Oak. He cites the book as his earliest memory for unlocking his passion for environment conservation and environmental justice. The following verse in the book has shaped his approach to public service:

  UNLESS someone like you
  Cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better.
  It’s not.

“My earliest memories of reading include this book. It makes reappearances many times in my life up through adulthood,” said Woodward. “It shaped who I am today, and I’m glad to share it with the next generation during March’s National Reading Month.”

National Reading Month was founded to celebrate the birthday of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss. Its purpose is to give children and young adults an opportunity to celebrate and improve their reading skills, and aims to make reading a daily habit.
