Chief judge swears in U.S. marshal

Mark Jankowski was sworn in Monday, April 8, as acting U.S. marshal for the Eastern District of Michigan.

Jankowski, 55, who has spent 28 years with the U.S. Marshals Service in Detroit, has held the acting position since the resignation in August 2018 of U.S. Marshal Robert Grubbs, who had held the position for 16 years.

Jankowski was born in Detroit and raised in Warren.

He joined the Marshals Service after obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Detroit Mercy in 1990. He started out as a co-op student intern, then a deputy U.S. Marshal. In September 2002, he went into the supervisory ranks and became chief deputy U.S. deputy marshal Grubbs' chief deputy in 2015.

The U.S. Marshals Service provides security at five federal courthouses in eastern Michigan, protects federal judges, federal prosecutors and seated jurors; pursues federal fugitives; transports prisoners; investigates sex offenders and missing persons cases; and conducts tactical operations.
