The Michigan Legislative Black Caucus (MLBC) announced Tuesday that they will sponsor a resolution to the Michigan Legislature to honor the late Judge Damon J. Keith, as they join the world in mourning the iconic jurist’s transition on Sunday.
MLBC remembers Keith not only for his amazing legal acumen, but also for his kind, generous and philanthropic spirit, civil rights activism and servings as a role model for our community.
“Judge Keith not only spoke to us through his legal opinions,” Rep. Sheldon A. Neeley, MLBC chairman said, “He used his influence and hard-earned respect to help thousands of others through both charitable and philanthropic efforts.
“For decades, Judge Keith issued opinions that spoke to the very heart of important constitutional rights, and always took a position that upheld the civil lib-erties guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution but sometimes ignored by both public and private entities,” Neeley added.
Rep. Leslie Love, MLBC executive vice chair, added, “While we mourn the loss of our beloved Judge Damon J. Keith, an iconic trailblazer and champion of civil rights and civil liberties, his indelible legacy of courage, compassion and justice will live on. This prominent Detroiter changed the social and legal landscape of this nation. He stood up to - and fought against - racial bigotry and set an example of integrity and pride in self for all to model. He was a standard barrier for ‘equal justice under the law’ and America is better because of his contributions.”
