May 12 is a significant date in Michigan's history. On this date in 1919, the Michigan Legislature established the Michigan State Park Commission, paving the way for Michigan's state parks system.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is marking this 100-year milestone with the Michigan state parks centennial celebration throughout the entire year.
Michigan's 103 state parks are home to campgrounds, boat launches, swimming beaches, fishing piers, trails, and lighthouses that attract 28 million visitors and host 1.1 million camp nights each year. State parks are a significant driver of the state's $26.6 billion outdoor recreation industry, and are primarily funded by camping and lodging reservations, oil, gas and mineral royalty revenues, and Recreation Passports sales.
The centennial motto is "Look back, give forward" essentially, a nod to the parks system's rich history and an energizing look forward to the next 100 years. The yearlong celebration includes special events, historical stories, podcasts, campfire stories, geocaching, a race series, special gear and merchandise, a memory map, park events and so much more.
