On Wednesday, Aug. 28, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus hosted a State Bar of Michigan Professionalism in Action Orientation for incoming students. The orientation premiered at the school in May 2009 under then State Bar of Michigan President Edward H. Pappas. Numerous judges and lawyers from metropolitan Detroit gave up their afternoons to meet in pairs with small groups of six to eight students each to discuss real-life ethics and professionalism issues that the students may confront as lawyers. Among those participating in the program were (front row, left to right) James Langely, WMU-Cooley Assistant Dean and Prof. Lisa Halushka, Michelle Donovan, Lynn Helland, State Bar of Michigan President Jennifer Grieco, Syeda Davidson, Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Farah, and Choi Portis; along with (back row , left to right) retired Judge Jack Gilbreath, Jordan Fields, Jeff May, Ashley Lowe, Greg Need, and Lori Smith.

Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Joseph Farah welcomed the new class of law students at Western Michigan University Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus on Aug. 28 during the law school’s orientation.
The new students also participated in the Professionalism in Action program featuring judges and attorneys.
Before administering the Honor Code, Farah noted that professionalism, ethics, and integrity are topics revisited each term as WMU-Cooley welcomes its incoming students.
“Today is the birth of your legal profession,” he told the students. “It is at this point when your integrity is the strongest, at its apex. It can only go down or be maintained. The ethical rules are easy to abide by now, because you are not confronted with the temptation to take the shortcut. But, does it really matter how many clients you have or how much money you make if you got there by cheating?”
During the Professionalism in Action program, 13 judges and lawyers representing five different counties, including current State Bar of Michigan President Jennifer Greico, welcomed students and thanked WMU-Cooley for continuing the tradition of the Professionalism Orientation, which started in 2009 at the Auburn Hills location.
