Jennifer M. Oertel, a widely recognized authority on laws affecting nonprofit and exempt organizations and the investors who support them, has joined Bodman PLC as a member in the Ann Arbor office.
Oertel will serve as co-chair, with Celeste E. Arduino, of Bodman’s new Exempt Organizations and Impact Investing Practice Group.
“Jennifer Oertel has an impressive track record of service to the philanthropic community. We are excited to have her join the firm,” said Bodman Chair Carrie Leahy. “Bodman has served nonprofit and exempt organizations for decades, and we plan to expand and diversify our services to these organizations even further with Jennifer on our team.”
Oertel has a varied business law background in securities, private equity, mergers & acquisitions, and corporate governance, which she leverages to advise her tax exempt clients on all aspects of their business operations. Her clients include impact funds, individual impact investors, social enterprises, family and corporate foundations, community foundations, public charities, national and statewide membership organizations including philanthropic serving organizations, and chambers of commerce.
Oertel serves as co-chair of the Nonprofit Corporations Committee of the Business Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. She is outside general counsel to the Council of Michigan Foundations and serves as the Council’s expert in residence for impact investing.
She is a frequent author and speaker on impact investing and philanthropy and has served on the boards of directors of several philanthropic organizations. Oertel frequently judges social enterprise business plan competitions and has served as a judge for many nonprofit business plan competitions.
