Families Against Narcotics (FAN), a grassroots organization based in Macomb County, has adapted some of its services in the midst of the coronavirus health crisis.
FAN is a nonprofit whose mission is to save lives by empowering individuals and communities to prevent and eradicate addiction.
One of the free programs it offers is training in the proper use of Narcan (naloxone), a medication used to counter the effects of an opioid overdose.
Normally held for groups of people in public spaces, FAN’s Narcan trainings were cancelled in the wake of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s executive stay-at-home order.
FAN officials then decided to take their Narcan training sessions online.
The sessions are taught by a certified Narcan trainer via Zoom, a free online conferencing service.
“Narcan training is incredibly important because it saves lives,” said FAN Director of Operations Kelley Nahas. “We wanted to find a way to keep the training sessions going, while still respecting Governor Whitmer’s executive order. The virtual trainings are the perfect way to do this.”
The online sessions are one-hour long and give the attendees background information on the opioid crisis, explain how Narcan works, and teach people how to properly administer the nasal spray version of the drug.
In addition, every person who takes the training will be provided a free dose of Narcan, which can be picked up at the FAN office in Clinton Township after the governor’s stay-at-home order is lifted.
“In normal times, we hand out the Narcan at the end of an in-person training,” Nahas said. “But these are anything but normal times.”

Founded in 2007, Families Against Narcotics (FAN) seeks to change the face of addiction, dispel the stigma of addiction and educate the community, as well as help those affected by addiction.
The organization has 22 chapters across the state of Michigan, as well as one chapter in North Carolina.
