Board amends Oakland Together Local Government Partnership program to include the Road Commission for Oakland County

At its meeting on July 24, the Oakland County Board of Commissioners amended the Oakland Together Local Government Partnership program to include the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) as a qualified local unit of government to apply for funds through the local government grant program. The program was established with a portion of the CARES Act funding Oakland County received from the federal government.

“The Road Commission for Oakland County is an essential piece of our local government,” Commissioner William Miller (D-Farmington) said. “I am happy that we were able to include them in the Oakland Together Local Government Partnership so that the RCOC has access to the grant program.”

The Oakland Together Local Government Partnership program was created on June 4 by the Board. It established a $35 million grant program to help cities, villages and townships, and other local government entities in Oakland County address the COVID-19 pandemic. Following federally approved guidelines, the grants can help cover necessary costs local governments have incurred due to the public health emergency, and that were not accounted for in a budget approved as of March 27, 2020.

“Everyone has been affected by this pandemic, including the Road Commission for Oakland County,” Commissioner Michael Spisz (R-Oxford) said. “It is no secret that we must continue to improve our road situation around the county and state. Using CARES Act funding to help offset the costs from the pandemic on the road commission will allow more funds to continue to go toward improving our roads.”

The Oakland Together Local Government Partnership Program Oversight Committee oversees the program, and it consists of three commissioners and two appointees of the Oakland County Executive. The bipartisan committee determines eligible applicants and develops, releases, reviews and recommends grant application processes for the program. It can also develop specific applications for public entities, including but not limited to, local libraries, senior centers and community centers.

“We are very appreciative of the County Board of Commissioners’ amendment to include the Road Commission in the Oakland Together Local Government Partnership,” Road Commission Chairman Greg Jamian said. “As were most local governmental entities, the Road Commission was significantly impacted financially by the pandemic, and this action will help to ensure that we continue to devote as much revenue as possible toward employee and motorist safety while improving the roads.”
