New prosecutor to be sworn in on December 17 via Zoom

For the past 20 years, Karen McDonald has served Oakland County as an assistant prosecutor, private practice attorney, and Circuit Court judge. Now, on Thursday, Dec. 17, she will be sworn in as Oakland County’s first new prosecutor in more than a decade.

McDonald’s virtual investiture will take place via Zoom at 7 p.m. and include nearly 500 attendees. Among those attending will be Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, a state-wide champion of criminal justice reform, who will speak on the importance of McDonald’s victory—both for Oakland County residents and for the future of the criminal justice system. The Lt. Governor also will be joined by Gary Torgow, chairman of TCF Financial Corp. and influential community leader in the city of Detroit, and Chief Justice Bridget
Mary McCormack, who, after this year’s re-election, will be entering into her 8th year on the Michigan Supreme Court.

Thursday’s investiture will mark the first step in McDonald’s career as Oakland County prosecutor. After unseating the 12-year incumbent prosecutor by an impressive margin of 65.76 to 34.16 percent in the August primary, McDonald is confident that her “strong leadership will pave the way for criminal justice reform” when she takes office in January 2021.

Her success in August was followed by a second decisive victory in November, where McDonald defeated Republican candidate Lin Goetz by a 14 percentage point margin.
