The Alternative Dispute Resolution Section of the State Bar of Michigan is pleased to announce that Bill Eddy of the High Conflict Institute will present at the 2021 annual ADR Summit, which will be held virtually over two days, March 9-10, from 1 to 5 p.m. Eight advanced mediation training credits will be offered. Eddy is a best-selling author, therapist, mediator, and lawyer and co-founder and pioneer of the High-Conflict Institute.
High conflict mediation requires a different approach. The Institute's methods and training provide a paradigm shift for mediating with those clients and counsel who are not responsive to ordinary mediation methods and focuses on an overall structured approach for high conflict mediation which incorporates these paradigm shifts. What helps is to do the opposite of what most do in traditional mediation (using approaches that work with most people).
This high conflict mediation training provides a new way to enhance existing mediation skills with paradigm shifts that seem to bring more success when there are one or more high-conflict people involved. Attendees will learn how to understand and manage high conflict behavior during mediation and in developing agreements which are sustainable long afterward.
Eddy pioneered the High Conflict Personality (HCP) theory and is a leading expert on managing disputes involving people with high conflict personalities. He was the senior family mediator at the National Conflict Resolution Center for 15 years, a certified family law specialist lawyer representing clients in family court for 15 years, and a licensed clinical social worker therapist with 12 years' experience. He serves on the faculty of the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at the Pepperdine University School of Law in California and is a conjoint associate professor with the University of Newcastle Law School in Australia. He has been a speaker and trainer in over 30 U.S. states and 10 countries and is the author or coauthor of 16 books (as of 2020) and has a popular blog on the Psychology Today website with over 4 million views.
Eddy is also the developer of the New Ways for Families® method of managing potentially high conflict families in and out of family court, and a method for managing potentially high conflict employees, New Ways for Work. He has also developed and trained hundreds of mediators with his New Ways for Mediation method.
