As the United States continues to address and recover from the year-old COVID-19 pandemic that has already resulted in more than 500,000 deaths and a historic economic recession,Wayne State University Law School Associate Professor Lance Gable leads 50 top national experts to offer a new assessment of the U.S. policy response to the crisis in the "COVID-19 Policy Playbook: Legal Recommendations for a Safer, More Equitable Future."

The assessment details how policymakers can best respond to, and recover from, the current pandemic. It covers a range of issues, including how to strengthen executive leadership for a stronger emergency response, expand access to public health, health care and telehealth; fortify protections for workers; and implement a fair and humane immigration policy. Throughout, the authors explore what legal frameworks could help dismantle the structures of racism and inequality that produce unjust health outcomes now, and potentially hinder the effort to build a more equitable, effective public health systems for future public health emergencies.

Gable, an internationally known expert on public health law and bioethics, served as interim dean of Wayne Law from September 2016 to August 2017. A member of the Law School faculty since 2006, he also served as associate dean from June 2014 until his appointment as interim dean in 2016. Prior to that, he was interim associate dean since June 2013. He teaches courses on Public Health Law, Bioethics and the Law, Torts and other health law subjects. His research addresses the overlap among law, policy, ethics, health and science.

Gable has published journal articles on a diverse array of topics, including public health law, ethics and policy; international human rights; bioterrorism and emergency preparedness; mental health; research ethics; and information privacy. He also is co-editor and co-author respectively of two books: "Research with High Risk Populations: Balancing Science, Ethics and the Law" and "Legal Aspects of HIV/AIDS: A Guide for Policy and Law Reform."

Sims is a seasoned practitioner with more than 30 years of experience representing clients in business disputes through arbitration, trials and appeals. He has experience in areas of business and corporate planning including appropriate entity selection, executive compensation planning, merger agreements, business acquisition agreements and more. In addition, Sims has served clients in the construction and real estate industries related to lease agreements, warehousing and logistics contracts, financing and other dealings requiring the guidance of an experienced third-party legal professional.

Sims is recognized by his peers for his legal ability and decades of representation on behalf of his clients. He is listed among Martindale-Hubbell's bar register of pre-eminent lawyers that have earner the AV Peer Review Rating, a distinction given to lawyers at the peak of professional excellence. Locally, he is an active member of the Oakland County Bar Association, American Bar Association and State Bar of Michigan.

Sims graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor's degree. He then received a law degree from Wayne State University Law School.

Howard & Howard Attorneys PLLC attorney Jeffrey A. Hoover has been selected as an "M&A All Star Advisor of the Year" by the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG) Detroit. He will be honored at the 6th Annual M&A All Star Awards Program on June 15, 2021.

Hoover, who practices out of the firm's Royal Oak office, concentrates his practice in the areas of business transactions and corporate matters, including mergers, acquisitions and reorganizations of business entities, corporate finance, commercial lending, and real estate.

Hoover was selected by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as one of its "Michigan Go To Business Lawyers" (2020), by Michigan Super Lawyers as one of its "Rising Stars" (2011-2019), and was also recognized by Michigan Leading Lawyers (2017-2020) and DBusiness "Top Lawyers" (2013; 2014; 2020). He was a recipient of the M&A Advisor's Emerging Leaders Awards in 2019.

Hoover earned his M.B.A. and B.B.A. from Eastern Michigan University and his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School (now known as Western Michigan University Cooley Law School).

Joseph Kimble, Western Michigan University Cooley Law School distinguished professor emeritus, has been named to the Michigan Lawyers Weekly Hall of Fame Class of 2021.

Kimble taught Research & Writing and Advanced Research & Writing for more than 30 years, and chaired the Research and Writing Department. He is now senior director of WMUCooley's Kimble Center for Legal Drafting.

"It's an honor to be named alongside some of Michigan's top lawyers," said Kimble. "I only hope I've had some success in moving our profession toward plain language. Writing, after all, is much of what we do, and for the sake of all our readers including clients we ought to do it well."

The award recognizes Michigan legal leaders over the age of 60, or who have practiced for 30 years or more, for their successful careers and valuable contributions to the community. Kimble and 20 other hall-of-fame recipients will be honored during an online recognition program to be broadcast on April 13.

Kimble was a staff attorney for the Michigan Supreme Court and Michigan Court of Appeals, later practiced law in Flint and joined the full-time faculty in 1984. He has published three books on legal writing and a children's book.

Kimble is also a past president of the international organization Clarity, served as the executive director of Scribes (the American Society of Legal Writers), is a founding director of the Center for Plain Language, and was on the board of the Legal Writing Institute. He has twice won a prestigious Burton Award for Reform in Law - in 2007 for his work in helping redraft the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and in 2011 for his work on the Federal Rules of Evidence. In 2015, he received the John W. Reed Lawyer Legacy Award from the State Bar of Michigan.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the reappointment of Richard Corriveau to the Michigan Civil Rights Commission.

Corriveau is a trial attorney and the president of Richard J. Corriveau Law PC.

Corriveau is reappointed to represent Democrats for a term commencing March 25, 2021 and expiring December 31, 2024.

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 to carry out the guarantees against discrimination articulated in Article I, Section 2. As further stated in Article V, Section 29, the State Constitution directs the Commission to investigate alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, and to "secure the equal protection of such civil rights without such discrimination." Public Acts 453 and 220 of 1976 and subsequent amendments have added sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disabilities to the original four protected categories.

This appointment is subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.
