The National Business Institute will present the video webinar “Collection Law from Start to Finish—A Michigan Guide” on Thursday, June 24, from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Winning a judgment against a bad debt doesn’t necessarily mean cash in hand. Attorneys should have the information they need to ensure payment of the debt while keeping in compliance with strict guidelines governing consumer collections.
The webinar will cover how to:
• Uncover assets—including property—that can help maximize monetary recovery.
• Stay in compliance: follow the guidelines governing actions permitted or restricted by the FDCPA.
• Learn effective (and legal) ways to get the debtor’s attention when moving forward with a lawsuit.
• Learn how to use wage garnishments and attachments to successfully collect judgments.
• Take the steps necessary to protect a client’s rights when the debtor files for bankruptcy.

—Stuart Collis, managing partner with Collis, Griffor, & Hendra PC in Ypsilanti. Collis practices in the areas of collections/creditor’s rights, civil litigation, commercial litigation, family law, divorce, child custody, paternity, criminal law, driver’s license restoration and DUI/OWI/drunk driving. He is a trained mediator and has extensive experience with case evaluation procedures. He has also served on a number of state and national organizations, including NARCA, WCBA, MCBA, and the Michigan Department of Agriculture’s Companion Animal Committee. Collis has been published extensively, including several republications. He has created and presented numerous educational sessions for interested organizations.
