Civil Rights Attorneys Mark Brewer and Harold Pope will lead Western Michigan University Cooley Law School's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. commemoration panel discussion. The Community Conversation, "Voter Suppression and Voter Protections," will take place virtually on Tuesday, January 18, from 5 to 6 p.m. via Webex.
Brewer, of Goodman Acker PC, was elected chair of the Michigan Democratic Party and served as MDP chair and executive chair until 2013. As a lawyer, Brewer's principal areas of practice include union-side labor, election, campaign finance and non-profit law. He has been involved in a wide variety of election cases since the 1980s including county, legislative and congressional redistricting, presidential primaries/caucuses, recalls, recounts, ballot access, voter protection on Election Day and the protection of the right to vote a straight party ticket. He has handled numerous ACLU cases in areas from free speech, religious liberty and separation of church and state to civil rights.
Pope is a litigator in Dykema's Detroit office. He has litigation experience representing local and national companies in state and federal courts on matters regarding products liability; and defense of sex, age and race discrimination claims for corporate employers. He often speaks on topics of civil rights. He recently led the webinar, Activating the Private Bar to Protect the Right to Vote Amid the Pandemic, for the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law.
