Western Michigan University Cooley Law School will host its next Community Conversations virtual event in honor of Pride Month in June. “LGBTQ+ Law: Outrageous Laws & Everyday Rebellions” will feature guest speaker Christine A. Yared on Tuesday, June 14, from noon to 1 p.m. via Webex.
Yared is an attorney, educator, activist, and author of “Private Love, Public School — Gay Teacher Under Fire” which was named as a 2022 Notable Book by the Library of Michigan.
During the online program, Yared will look into:
• What are some of the anti-LGBTQ+ laws
• What are the root causes of these laws
•What can you do as a law student and later as a lawyer to create change
Yared has been practicing law for more than three decades. She has consistently been an advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and has fought against discrimination based on LGBTQ identity, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, and against sexual harassment.
Yared obtained her law degree from Stetson University College of Law and her undergraduate degree in business administration from Michigan State University. She has taught courses as an adjunct professor in constitutional law, LGBTQ law, civil rights history, cultural communication and diversity at Grand Valley State University.
