American Bar Association webinar to address abortion services and employee benefits

In the aftermath of the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling that overturned Roe v. Wade and changed the landscape for reproductive rights, the American Bar Association will host a webinar, “Abortion Services and Employee Benefits: Plan Design Options and Legal Compliance Post Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization” on Tuesday, July 12, at 1 p.m.

The Dobbs decision removes the federal protection of abortion rights and enables each state to set its own legal requirements regarding abortions. This decision impacts employers and plan sponsors, which now have a number of actions to consider. A panel of experts in the field will discuss the legal implications of Dobbs for both insured and self-funded group health plans, employee benefit plan options and possible design changes, medical travel reimbursements, ERISA preemption issues and legal compliance.

Speakers at the 90-minute program will include:

• Kathryn Bakich, senior vice president and national health compliance practice leader, The Segal Group, Washington, D.C.

• Sonya Gordon, compliance manager, HUB International, San Francisco

• Sarah T. Kanter, associate at Trucker Huss, San Francisco

• Gabrielle White, counsel, Davis + Gilbert LLP, New York City

• Kirsten Scott (moderator), partner, Renaker Hasselman Scott LLP, San Francisco

The webinar’s sponsors are the ABA Joint Committee on Employee Benefits; Health Law Section; Section of Real Property, Trust and Estate Law; Business Law Section; Section of Labor and Employment Law; Section of Taxation; Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section; and the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel.

Cost for the webinar is $150 for ABA members, $125 for section members, and $175 non-members. To register, visit www.americanbar.org and click on “events.”
