During a recent Oakland County Board of Commissioners meeting, Commissioner Philip J. Weipert (R-South Lyon) introduced a bipartisan resolution that would improve recreation opportunities at Lyon Oaks County Park. Through a matching grant from the county's American Rescue Plan Act funding, the Oakland County Parks and Recreation project would bring recreational activities closer to existing soccer fields to give outdoor enthusiasts - plus siblings, parents, grandparents and caretakers of those using the soccer fields - additional opportunities to enjoy the perks of being at the park. Lyon Oaks, which is located in southwestern Oakland County, is a popular destination due to its features, including a dog park, miles of trails and a golf course.
"Relocating a playground that needs to be replaced anyway is the perfect time to explore how we can make Lyon Oaks even better for residents and visitors," Weipert said. "Plus, incorporating this new adult workout equipment gives us a chance to create an experience that's inclusive of all ages."
The $400,000 project, which would be eligible for a $200,000 matching grant from the county, aims to replace and relocate an existing playground at Lyon Oaks. By placing the new playground near the park's soccer complex, families will be able to access the equipment while being close to other activities. In addition, the new adult fitness area would provide an option for adults to be physically active while near the soccer fields.
Lyon Oaks preserves 800 acres of environmentally sensitive wetlands within a 1,041-acre park. In addition to soccer fields, the park features a day-use area with a picnic shelter and playground; volleyball, horseshoe pits, and cricket fields; 6 miles of natural trails for biking, cross-country skiing and on-leash dog walking; and a 13-acre, fenced dog park. Its Arthur Hills-designed 18-hole golf course includes a driving range and elegant banquet facilities.
The resolution was referred to the Legislative Affairs and Government Operations Committee and the Finance Committee for further consideration.
