As Veterans Day (November 11) approaches, the Michigan Supreme Court and Michigan Department of State are promoting a new 30-second video created by the 19th District Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) in Dearborn that contains vital information for Wayne County military veterans struggling with mental health issues.
“Most veterans are strengthened by their military service, but combat experiences and other duties have unfortunately left a growing number of veterans with PTSD, other mental health issues, or brain injuries,” said Judge L. Eugene Hunt, Jr., a military veteran himself and presiding judge of the 19th District VTC. “Left untreated, mental health disorders common among veterans can lead to unemployment, homelessness, or involvement in the criminal justice system.”
The video shows a phone number and a QR code that viewers can use to find more information about local VTC programs, which aim to divert certain justice-involved veterans away from incarceration and into treatment with access to tools for rehabilitation and readjustment.
Justice Elizabeth T. Clement serves as the MSC liaison to Michigan problem-solving courts, including a nation-leading 29 VTCs. “We have proven year after year how effective our vet courts are in providing access to necessary treatment for those who have bravely served our country,” she said. “I applaud Judge Hunt and his team for creatively engaging with nearby communities to connect local vets with much-needed resources.”
“We make government work for the people of Michigan and are proud to support veterans by guiding them to the possibly life-saving assistance they need,” said Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson.
The veterans court informational video has already been showing at the following Secretary of State (SOS) branch offices in and near Wayne County:

In addition to helping to guide justice-involved veterans through treatment, VTCs provide many individualized benefits by collaborating with the Veterans Administration healthcare system, auxiliary treatment providers, and volunteer veteran mentors, who work directly with VTC participants.
