Senators introduce Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey in Senate committee hearing

U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Gary Peters on Wednesday introduced Judge Jonathan J.C. Grey to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee for a hearing considering his nomination to be the U.S. District Court judge for the Eastern District of Michigan. Grey was nominated by President Biden on September 2. A video of the hearing can be found online at www.judiciary.senate.gov/meetings/11/30/2022/nominations.

In her introduction, Stabenow said, “I can think of no better place for Judge Grey to continue to serve the people of Michigan than on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. I urge the committee to support him, and I look forward to supporting his nomination in the Senate.”

“Without question, Judge Grey is accomplished and has critical attributes for federal judges: he is committed to upholding the rule of law, has strong interpersonal skills, and treats everyone with both dignity and respect,” Peters said. “I am confident that Judge Grey will be confirmed by the Senate and honorably represent the people of Michigan and our country on the federal bench – and urge this committee’s support of his nomination.”

Grey has served as a U.S. magistrate judge for the Eastern District of Michigan since 2021. He previously served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio from 2016 to 2021 and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan from 2012 to 2016. From 2011 to 2012 and 2007 to 2009, he was an associate at Seyfath Shaw LLP in Chicago. Grey served as a law clerk for U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Damon J. Keith, Sixth Circuit, from 2010 to 2011 and U.S. District Court Judge W. Louis Sands, Middle District of Georgia, from 2009 to 2010.

Grey received his law degree from the Georgetown University Law Center in 2007 and B.S. from Morehouse College in 2004.
