Child abuser resentenced and parental rights terminated after appeals court rules with the prosecutor's office

On Wednesday, Collin Quint was resentenced after the Michigan Court of Appeals agreed with the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office on a stiffer punishment.

In March 2021, Quint pled no contest to second degree child abuse for the violent assault of his nine week old son. As a result of the abuse, the child suffered significant physical and cognitive damage.  Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard Caretti sentenced Quint to zero to 17 months in prison.

The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office appealed to the Michigan Court of Appeals based on Caretti making an error in scoring Michigan’s sentencing guidelines.  The Michigan Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office.

Quint was resentenced Wednesday to 21 months to ten years in prison, no bootcamp to lessen his sentence, and no contact with the victim. The sentence agreement to 21 months was a balance of justice for the victim as well as mercy for the defendant so as to achieve the sentencing goals of punishment, deterrence, and rehabilitation.

Quint was immediately taken into custody by the Michigan Department of Corrections. In addition to the criminal sentence, Quint’s parental rights were terminated.

“The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office Child Protection Unit and Appeals Unit worked hard on getting justice for this little boy. The  Michigan Court of Appeals made the correct determination in this case,” said Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido.
